She and I: A Fugue by Michael R. Brown

Received ‘Edited Galley’ for ‘Review Only’ in mail – opened book – read until page 113 – closed book, threw up.

My regular readers know (I hope) that I normally do write such short and negative reviews. However, about this book, there can be no other review that I can write. When I read about the plane crash (on page 113) and found myself thinking, “It’s a shame he didn’t die in the plane crash, then I wouldn’t have to read this book.” I realized it was time to shut the book, give it 0 stars and go on with my life.

How I wrote this review is how the book is written, only he covers his life practically from birth on in such a fashion, all the trivial mundane events in his life. The words tedious and boring come to mind. I am afraid if I write more, then this review will become tedious and boring. I always try to be kind with my reviews, I certainly don’t want a reputation as a hater, here the kindness will be to the people who read my review, if you still want to read this book, read a good portion of it before you buy it. Please don’t waste your money.

For those unfamiliar with my rating systems ‘0 Stars: Blech, wanted to leave it in the subway, on the tracks’, I didn’t do this for two reasons, (1) that would be littering and (2) I buy expensive bookmarks and I didn’t want to lose one. However, if anyone is going camping and needs paper to start their campfire, I have about 140 sheets of 20lb stock you can use. Sans bookmark.

What’s On Your Desk Wednesday?

What’s on your desk Wednesday? is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Sassy Brit of Alternative-Read.com

Here’s what you do:

Grab a camera and take a photo of your desk! Or anywhere you stack your books/TBR pile. And no tidying!

Add this photo to your blog.

Tag at least 5 people!

Come back here and leave a link back to your photo in the comments section.

That’s it.

However, for those without digital cameras or blogs of your own, you can do this instead: (or both if you are keen!)

List at least 5 BOOKISH things on your desk (I’m thinking your TBR pile or books you haven’t shelved…)

List at least 5 NON BOOK things. (I’m thinking some of some of the more unusual items on your desk/table?)

Tag at least 5 people to do the same.

Well, I don’t have a desk or night stand I do have a dresser top:
Hmm, looks like no books there, just lotions and nail polish and stuff like that.

Well, here is my bookshelf, I think I’ve read all of these though. Aha, I know where!

Under my bed in a blue box are the books I have that are waiting to be read. You can see I like mysteries. Underneath these mysteries are my true crime and memoirs. You might even find a romance or two, although I don’t usually read them. I sometimes get them as a free book with an order of books. This isn’t the only place I have stashed books though. Follow me,
to my closet! This is normally where I keep my library books, so I don’t get them confused with the books I own, I don’t have any out at the moment though.

And lastly I have a lot of books here.

Almost Dead by Lisa Jackson

In If She Only Knew we meet the Cahill family, (click here for my review), Almost Dead continues the story 10 years later with Marla’s daughter, Cissy Cahill.

Cissy is married now with a toddler son. Her world appears to be falling apart, her marriage is failing and then the people closest to her start dieing, being murdered actually. Cissy herself is being stalked. Detective Anthony Paterno has returned and is the investigating officer.

As the police put the pieces together and the killer draws closer, a secret from the past holds the key to solving the case.

Once again Lisa Jackson draws the reader into another world, a world where fear rules and twisted individuals are willing to do anything to get what they want. While you could read this novel without reading the first one, I think it is much more enjoyable if you already have a basic knowledge of some of the characters in Almost Dead. The twists in this novel are thrilling, once again with unexpected turns and a surprise if not a total shock at the end makes this another winner.

Quotation of the Day

Seaside Classic: ‘Best Beach Read of All Time’

“The best beach read of all time is To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf’s luminous 1927 novel that is about–aptly–a seaside vacation, although admittedly that’s a bit like saying Moby Dick is about a fishing trip. . . . Once a novel is classified as ‘literature,’ something awful seems to happen; people start revering it and stop reading it. The book is placed on a high shelf, maybe even tucked inside a glass-fronted cabinet, and there it sits–admired to death, in effect. If Woolf still had a say in the matter, I think she’d much prefer glimpsing a copy of To the Lighthouse with a smear of suntan lotion on its crinkled cover or with a bug crushed between pages 101 and 102.”–Julia Keller in the Chicago Tribune.

Serial by Jack Kilborn, Blake Crouch

This is my first book by these two authors. This is a short story, it was free e-book from Sony. I believe the intention was to get the reader hooked so they go out and buy every one of their books! Guess what, it worked.

If you like to read about dark, twisted, evil people this is the book for you. If you are thinking about hitchhiking, read this book, if you feel like picking up a hitchhiker read this book. These are the people that took all the fun out of hitching a ride with strangers.

~ My Favorite Book Read in May ~

My Ears Are Bent by Joseph Mitchell, one (1) because as I have already mentioned, I prefer non-fiction to fiction. Two (2) his style of writing is unique, three (3) they didn’t edit or change anything to make the language politically correct, so you got the feel for his style and for the time period, I felt transported in time. Four (4) it felt honest, like he was writing things as they truly were with no polishing up.

So that’s it, my favorite read from May. Do you have a favorite of the books you read?

Deep Freeze by Lisa Jackson

Synopsis
Former movie star Jenna Hughes left Hollywood for an isolated farm in Oregon to get away from fame. But someone has followed her-an obsessed fan whose letters are personal and deeply disturbing. While Jenna’s already shaken up by what she’s seen on paper, she’d be terrified if she knew what Sheriff Shane Carter is investigating. It’s a shocking case that started with the discovery of a dead woman in the woods. Now two more women are missing, one of whom bears a striking resemblance to Jenna.

As a winter storm bears down on the Pacific Northwest, a merciless killer’s grisly work has only just begun. Jenna is getting closer to meeting her biggest fan-one who wants nothing more than to see her dead.

My review: Once again I found myself totally wrapped up in a book. Lisa Jackson has a very twisted killer in this book, who kills with the cold. Taking an obsessed fan to new levels, he abducts women with the same physical characteristics as Jenna (won’t tell you why, that would be a major spoiler, but trust me it is creepy) and leaves dead bodies behind him and seems to be unstoppable.

You wonder how he is able to do everything he does, but it is not revealed until the end and when everyone knows, then you wonder how can anyone stop him.

Another thing I like about Lisa Jackson, is her endings are not all the same, like some authors that I have stopped reading. She has fresh twists to her books.
