Ex-Manson follower Susan Atkins dies

It may seem strange that I am posting this here, but I read and reviewed Helter Skelter and so I felt it was appropriate to post this here as this is the kind of fact that would be included in a reprinting of the book.

Also I have not posted anything here in a while and wanted to let people know I am still around. HA HA

I didn’t post the whole article, but I included the link if you are interested.

“(CNN) — Susan Denise Atkins, a former member of the Manson family who killed pregnant actress Sharon Tate during a two-day killing spree in 1969, has died, according to a California corrections spokesman. She was 61.

Atkins died at 11:46 p.m. PT Thursday (2:46 a.m. Friday ET) at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, said Terry Thornton with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Atkins, California’s longest-serving female inmate, was suffering from terminal brain cancer. Since she entered prison in 1971, she became a born-again Christian who worked to help at-risk youth, victims of violent crimes and homeless children, among others, according to a Web site maintained by her attorney and husband, James Whitehouse.

But Atkins was best known for her actions in 1969 when as a 21-year-old she and other Manson family members participated in seven murders over two days, a rampage that terrorized Los Angeles.

By her own admission, Atkins held Tate, who was the eight months’ pregnant, down as the 26-year-old actress pleaded for mercy, stabbing her 16 times. In a 1993 parole board hearing, Atkins said Tate “asked me to let her baby live. … I told her I didn’t have any mercy on her.”

After stabbing Tate to death, Atkins — known in the family as Sadie Mae Glutz — scrawled the word “pig” in blood on the door of the home Tate shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski, according to historical accounts of the murders.
Polanski was not home at the time, but three of Tate’s houseguests — Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring and Voytek Frykowski — were killed. Also slain was teenager Steven Parent, who was visiting the home’s caretaker in his cottage out back.

All of those involved — Manson, Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel and Charles “Tex” Watson — were convicted in connection with the five deaths that night and the killings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night. Atkins also was convicted in the earlier murder of music teacher Gary Hinman.

They were all sentenced to death. But their sentences were automatically commuted to life in prison when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the nation’s death penalty laws in 1972.

Atkins’ brain cancer was diagnosed in March 2008, Whitehouse wrote on his Web site. On May 15, 2008, doctors predicted she would live less than six months. But she passed that deadline, he wrote, and celebrated her 21st wedding anniversary on December 7.

In July 2008, Atkins requested a “compassionate release” from the California Board of Parole Hearings. It was denied by unanimous decision. Her request was opposed by Tate’s sister, Debra, Los Angeles County prosecutors and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others.

. . .

Atkins gave birth to a son while living at Spahn Ranch, an old movie set, with other members of the Manson family. While she was on death row, she wrote, he was legally taken from her because no one in her family was willing to raise him.

“His name and identity have been changed and sealed, so I have no idea where he is or how he is doing,” she wrote. “I have since been told his name was changed to Paul, and whether or not that is true I like it. … My continuing separation from my son, even after all these years, remains an incredibly poignant and enduring loss.”

Ironically, Sharon Tate planned to name her unborn son Paul. The gravestone bears the inscription Paul Richard Polanski.”

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory

The White Queen is the first book in a new series from the time period in England when the Plantagenets were the claimants and kings that ruled, before the Tudors. At this time there were deadly feuds, wars for the throne of England known as the Wars of the Roses, also called the Cousins’ War, since cousin was battling cousin (along with their supporters) to be King of England. Within the Plantagenets were different families fighting each other (I think) and it was all very confusing, especially with the custom of naming children after the rulers, there were Edwards and Richards and Henrys all over the place. One Edward would die and then another would be mentioned and I would stop and say, “Wait, didn’t Edward just die?” But I digress.

The White Queen is told from the perspective of Elizabeth Woodville, who was the White Queen. She was not a member of any royal family but she was extraordinarily beautiful and caught the eye of the newly crowned boy king and married him. She aspired to be Queen of England and she was crowned Queen, but it is a position hard to hold and dangerous to be in. Her two sons become central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the missing princes in the Tower of London whose fate is still unknown.

I imagine it is not easy to take an account that is partially known and fill it in with your own details seamlessly, so that it appears to be all one narrative. This is what Ms. Gregory has done. I have read many biographies and auto-biographies over the years and if I had not known it was “Historical Fiction” I would have thought I was reading someones diary. I found The White Queen to be informative and engaging. It caught my attention from the beginning and never got boring. I also appreciated that in her own narrative, Ms. Gregory didn’t add a lot of unnecessary drama. Her imagined thought processes of Elizabeth seemed to be drawn from her knowledge of the era, how women were treated and what they had to do to survive and keep their families safe in a time that was not favorable to women and at anytime you could go from being Queen of England to a nobody in a very short time period.

So between the wars and namesakes and confusion, Philippa Gregory does an excellent job of sorting it all and telling the tale in a logical manner, and I tried to follow along, I can’t blame Ms. Gregory for my little pea brain.

If you are a fan of Philippa Gregory, I would say you just HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. If you enjoy historical fiction you should read this book. If you want a book that will entertain you and stimulate your mind you should read this book. If you love romance, well this might not be the book for you. I enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars.

Dancing With Ana

Beth is a lucky girl…

She comes from a loving family. She has three best friends. She loves to surf and lives five minutes from the beach. She also recently discovered that the boy she’s grown up with has the most amazing green eyes…

Beth has every reason to smile. Every reason to be happy. Every reason to feel blessed.

Then why is she sticking her fingers down her throat?

My review: As you can tell from the synopsis, this book is dealing with anorexia, I felt the author did a good job of showing how the compulsion starts, with the need for control. As Beth feels her life spiraling further and further out of control she decides if she can just lose 10 pounds her life will be better. Even with the love of her boyfriend and the support of her friends she soon finds that the diet is no longer a way to lose weight but a way to control her life, an obsession.

I felt the ending of this a little too pat, those of us who have experienced obsessive compulsive disorder know there are no pat solutions to it. However, I appreciated the way the author stressed the importance of family and friend support and how she showed it depended on Beth to overcome her obsession. How the fact that her friends would be there for her no matter what was a fact she had to come to realize by herself.

I would recommend this book for teens and their parents.
